Subversive Symbolism focuses on the themes of subversion, religion, and their ever-growing presence in America. As someone born and raised in the South, it feels evident that religion (specifically Christianity) plays a major role in decision-making on the local to the national level. From laws and education to personal opinions and ethics, religion shapes an individual’s identity in more ways than we know.
By removing the religious symbols from buildings, the southern architecture becomes drab and mundane. The symbols are then presented in a diptych next to the original image; Which seems to float and create their own compositions without the buildings. These images create a sense of desiderium in the viewer and make them ask questions
about the power of influence symbols have once removed from their original locations.
The intent of this series is for people to question aspects of religion in their daily lives as well as religion's embedment in our society.
